Can't Hardly Wait and Waiting for the Right Moment
The moral case for knowing when to wait for the right moment or not.
People love the idea of the perfect moment.
A moment where everything falls into place and it feels right. Where we know the right thing to say and what to do. The kind of moment where people can look back on it with a positive feeling. In moments like these, your life makes sense and you feel good about all of it. The difficulty you've been through up to that point isn't so bad and the things you do afterwards are often worth it. Largely because these moments are meant to be fun. It's almost as if time stops and your world is only about this moment and whoever you are able to spend them with. You want to spend it with people who mean so much to you that you can talk about such a moment when you're old enough to look back with your kids and tell them about it.
Trying to create these moments causes a lot of problems though. You find yourself incredibly stressed and generally nervous about the possibility of these moments. Wanting to have these moments usually requires a certain amount of work to make happen. If you're looking for a moment with someone you're in love with or hope to be in love with, having such a moment can be hard. To make sure you find the right moment to ask someone out. Hopefully with the idea that they end up saying yes. The perfect place to have that first date. You get the meal you want and it's incredibly tasty. As a result, everything works out and your life is perfect. It all starts with that first moment you approach someone, if you can manage it without going a little nuts.
You want that perfect moment and so it destroys your self confidence. You put off the moment you were going to try. Worrying that it won't be that perfect moment. The more you worry the less likely you're willing to go ahead and do it. Ultimately, you can get to the point where you regret not choosing a previous moment. Or you run out of potential moments to make perfect. You might find yourself in a scenario where the person you want to have that perfect moment is going to leave and you'll never see them again. If you don't go for it now, you will never have that perfect moment.
Can't Hardly Wait is very much about wanting that perfect moment. Preston Meyers, as played fantastically by Ethan Embry, is obsessed with the idea of having a perfect moment with Amanda Beckett, as played brilliantly by Jennifer Love Hewitt. He has wanted to be able to say the things he wanted to say to her so badly. Hoping that if he just got a chance to say it, she would see who he really is and love him for who he is. They can have that perfect moment together and both be happy. No matter what might happen later. At least that's the dream.
