Author’s Note: Season 2 is airing now.
We all get obsessed with something.
For most people, they get obsessed with pretty simple things. You get into eating a certain type of food instead of others, or a particular movie or TV show. These obsessions are generally harmless and don't really affect people in any serious way. They don't take over people's lives. At least not to the point of a problem. In fact, they can be kind of fun when you can go to conventions and fan events to celebrate these things. However, there are things which can become a serious problem, like drugs and alcohol. Maybe one of the worst ways in which you can be impacted is when you become obsessed with an actual person. You can want them in your life so badly that you will turn your lives entirely around this other person. All so you can find a way to spend time with them or at the very least watch them.
Most people who become obsessed with another aren't appreciated. Especially when it gets to a terrible need. They will go so far as to take the person they believe they care about so much. Remove them from everything and everyone around them so that they can have them all to themselves. That way nothing will ever get in the way of the need to be with that other person. Stop them from leaving by locking them in a closet or a house or whatever they have access to. Of course, this doesn't mean that they're going to be able to keep them there. Whoever's been taken usually have friends and family who care about them and want them back.
Unfortunately, finding a way to get these people back isn't as simple as it seems. If it were, the person who took them wouldn't be able to keep them. Thankfully, there are people who are just as obsessed with the idea of getting people back who've been taken as there are those who take them. These people are usually the kind of people who join the police or some kind of law enforcement, but not always. Some of them will have been the victim of it themselves and so will simply want to do what they can to help, regardless of whether it's through law enforcement or not.
Found is very much about the obsessions people can have for others. Gabrielle Mosely, as played brilliantly by Shanola Hampton, was herself a victim of someone who took her as a child. This man, known as Sir and played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, became obsessed with the idea of keeping Gabrielle to himself. Yet she managed to escape and find a way back to something like a normal life. Although in doing so she developed an obsession of her own. She became obsessed with understanding and catching the kinds of people who became obsessed with taking others. Enough that she found other people who went through something similar and brought them together as a team.
All with the goal of trying to stop the obsessions of others. To keep people from living through what they did.
It's a fascinating thing and definitely worth exploring, so do yourself a favour and watch Found as soon as you can.
Found is available on Peacock in the United States and CityTV in Canada.
I loved Shanola Hampton in Shameless so much. She's an absolute force of nature. I might check Found out because of her.
