Legacies Season 4: Embracing All of Yourself
The moral case for embracing your good parts instead of just the bad parts.
It's important to embrace your whole self wherever possible.
We've explored in the past about the way in which people can and do embrace the bad parts of ourselves. That it's important to understand how the negative aspects of yourself manifest and what you need to do to mitigate it. To create a balance between your bad aspects and your good aspects. Otherwise you're likely to become either a destructive or down right evil person if you're not careful. However, there are important ideas about embracing your good aspects that are important to explore as well. Not everyone is necessarily willing to explore the good parts of themselves.
You would think it would be obvious to do such things. Everyone wants to be a good person and so they would naturally gravitate towards their goodness over their bad parts. Of course the problem is that there are benefits to embracing just your negative aspects. When you see yourself as inherently bad, you can find yourself thinking that there's no such thing as good. That people are all bad all the time and it's just a matter of degrees of bad. Which means that you can excuse your behaviour towards others and their way of behaving towards you as fundamentally bad.
Through a lens like that, you can justify virtually any action you want. Because if you don't do it then someone else will and so it's better that you do it instead. There is another way to go about things, but it requires a lot more complexity. In embracing your good aspects, you learn that sometimes people are good and others are bad. And it's not entirely clear which is which in the obvious way you get when you think of everyone is inherently bad. But you have to be willing to embrace these aspects of yourself as a way to get there.
The most recent season of Legacies seems to be exploring this willingness to embrace a more complete picture of yourself, particularly the good aspects. With a lot of the show up to this point, it's been about struggling to come to terms with the bad parts of the characters. Hope, MG, Lizzie and Josie spent so much of their time worrying about how they might hurt each other if they aren't careful. It's something that they can't escape, no matter how hard they try. However, they have slowly but surely embraced more and more of the good parts of themselves.
In particular this season, that's a major part of the story. Hope has decided that despite all the potential aspects to who she was whether it's her family history or what she is, namely a tribrid, she has to embrace it all. She has to embrace the benefits of her existence. Mainly the fact that by becoming a tribid in all its aspects, she can ultimately defeat Malivore. Someone who has plagued her for many years and harms so many people. All of the characters have to embrace what they can do with the things they have.
Give yourself the opportunity to explore the good parts of yourself by watching Legacies.
