Most people at some point find that their lives have gone off the rails.
They think that there was a decision they made where if only they'd made a different decision, their lives could've been so much different. Usually in the belief that whatever they would've done was destined to be better. That this other life was one in which they made all the right decisions and always got what they wanted. Because of this belief, there's a certain amount of resentment or wishful thinking about the life not lived. A desire to know that what would've happened is who they were supposed to be. Simply because the life they're currently living must somehow be lacking. However, in reality we can't know for sure that whatever would've been is in fact better. Yet we can't help but feel otherwise.
It's a comforting thought. That circumstances in the universe somehow conspired to make your life turn out the way it has. You don't have to take responsibility for your own participation in how things turned out. After all, you're just one person against the universe. What people often fail to consider is the fact that their lives could've been much more difficult even if the universe had decided for you that your life went in a different direction. Maybe even worse in some ways. If only you'd chosen to take that job instead of another. Or maybe if you'd slept with someone else instead of who you ended up with, or even that you didn't sleep with anyone at all that night. Things would've been better. But maybe they wouldn't have.
Perhaps your life turned out exactly the way it was supposed to, even if it wasn't the way you thought it should have. These events shaped your life in profound ways because they were supposed to. They were what you needed in that moment. It might have given you something you didn't even know you wanted. It's difficult to come to terms with that fact but sometimes it's better if you can. To let go of what could've been and allow for what is true in the moment.
Look Both Ways is fundamentally about learning to accept that different choices aren't necessarily good or bad. Natalie Bennett, as played brilliantly in a dual role by Lili Reinhart, has to live with two different ways her life could've turned out. While they never intersect directly, it's partly beneficial to see that in each outcome there are difficult decisions to be made. Effort made to try and achieve the things she wants to achieve. Trying to have some kind of life worth living and to be happy with how her life has turned out.
While at some points, she does wonder about what could've been if not for what happened, she ultimately understands that her life is what it is. She is living the life she should be. Even if at times it's an incredibly difficult thing to do.
It's a beautiful thing to watch and I encourage you to understand the process of accepting your own circumstances.
