Lost and Delirious and the Tragedy of Forbidden Love
The moral case for understanding what it's like to hide your love away.
We all love something we shouldn’t some times.
Whether it’s that piece of cake we shouldn’t eat or that drug we shouldn’t take. Some part of us wants it even though we shouldn’t. We get that need for it in some way. This desire can even be about a person. We can love people that we shouldn’t, or at the very least someone who other people think we shouldn’t. It can be a criminal, like a serial killer or a cult leader, or just someone who brings out the worst in you. For whatever reason, when you’re around this person you get some of the worst instincts and you’re willing to do anything for them.
Yet despite the fact that we know this to be true, we can’t help but love them. To want them and even sacrifice your relationships with friends and family for the one you love. What really hurts is when the person you love isn’t a bad person but other people can’t accept that you love them. Either your friends or family or even society at large simply can’t accept the kind of love you have for someone. As much as we might want everyone to be accepted for who they are and the people they love, sadly not everyone will end up with people who are accepted by others. The more people who are likely to be less accepting of your love, the more you’re probably going to want to hide it away.
It can tear you up inside that if you express your love in any kind of public way, you might lose everything and everyone around you. Maybe even end up banished from society and living on the edges of it. In a situation like this, it’s completely understandable that you would do everything you can to hide the love away from everyone but the one you love. Some part of you might even like the idea of having a secret love that only two people know about. But at some point it can become a burden. To feel such an intense love for someone and not be able to share it with the world.
Lost and Delirious is very much about what happens when you have to hide your forbidden love away. Pauline and Victoria, as played beautifully by Piper Perabo and Jessica Paré, are in love with each other but they can’t tell anyone about it. The people around them wouldn’t understand and Victoria’s parents would disown her if she let anyone know. It’s only when they are partly discovered by Mary, as played by Mischa Barton, that things begin to unravel for them.
While Mary is willing to keep Pauline and Victoria’s love a secret, it partly gives them the chance to let their guard down. To the point that they get discovered, leading them down a truly tragic series of events. Once the secret is out, there’s only so much they can do to keep it that way.
