Riverdale Season 6 Review: Getting What You Want
The moral case for being careful what you wish for.
May you get what you wish for is an old Chinese curse.
Seems like a rather strange thing to curse someone with isn't it? After all, getting what you want is a good thing, or so people like to think. It shouldn't be a curse to get what you want, because in theory when you get what you want, it makes you happy. Once you have something, it feels good. Why would making someone feel good be a curse? People assume that there's no down side to a positive experience for someone to have. However, no one ever really thinks about what happens after. They assume that when that happens, we're going to be happy. Except in reality we end up much less happy. It seems like a strange contradiction, getting what you want making you unhappy.
Part of the reason for this is because once you have the thing you want, you no longer want for it. You have to find something new to desire and go after. Which is why getting what you wish for is in fact a curse and not a positive development. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't want things. Most people have something that they want, whether it's food or shelter or emotional support like love and sex. It's not possible to live in a world where people don't want things. As a result, the question to have is what you do when you get what you're after.
Fairly consistently, Riverdale fans have wanted certain things. They've wanted certain characters to get together in a relationship. They wanted to see certain storylines from the comics to happen on screen. One of the persistent problems many fans have had is that they're often denied these things by the show. While some fans get what they want from the show, others don't. If and when something does change in the show to where fans get what they're after, those who were happy with the status quo or what came before end up unhappy. No one is ever really happy regardless of what happens to the characters on the show. It's an endless source of debate among fans.
In the most recent sixth season, many of the fans have gotten things that they want. Characters who had long been kept apart finally came together. Storylines that they'd been waiting for finally came to pass. Yet much like discussed, it often didn't go the way people wanted. By the time the show finally got to this place where fans got to what they wanted, they didn't have faith that it would be done in a way they'd be happy with. Many fans were in fact right. They didn't get what they were ultimately after.
Almost as if it's some kind of curse or something. The only thing you can really do is figure out what you want and find a way to acquire it, then move on to that next thing.
