The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and the Book of Life
The moral case for seeing your life as a book other people can read.
Every life is like a book.
It has a beginning, a middle and an end. What's important about the story isn't this part of the story. The important part is the parts in between. All those moments where your actual life happens. It's not always the most dramatic parts where you have the big events and everything changes. Some times the things which make the biggest difference are the moments which seem ordinary that everyone can relate to. You're just going along doing your job, waking up, getting home and then going to sleep. From time to time things will happen in those parts. You might find people that you never expected you would care about come into your lives. Those who will become so important for you that very quickly you'll want to build a life around. It's not a big fight or a powerful drama, it just is something that happens.
This is what makes up the best parts of life. When you meet the woman of your dreams but she doesn't make the best first impression because she's not there to date you. Or because you're not the nicest person in the world so she doesn't like you. But in these moments, you come into their life and eventually you start to see things you like about them. How they make you smile and the way you share each other's interests. Falling in love doesn't happen all at once in big dramatic moments. It happens over time until it's hard to deny it anymore. You're in love and you want to be together. Although your lives might not line up all that well. Because life isn't that simple.
You never know when this might happen but there's always a chance. Like a story with missing pages, one day you find those missing pages and your book seems a little more interesting. Hopefully in those moments you become the parts of the story that the other people's books are missing as well. Maybe not right away but eventually it will fit. But the problem is you never know exactly how long your book will be. Some books are long and winding, while others are short and sweet. Yet it gives you the chance to give someone else their story.
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry is very much about how the book of your life goes. A.J. Fikry, as played beautifully by Kunal Nayyar, has a pretty simple life. He owns a book store and has basically committed to the idea that this is his life. Even if he doesn't necessarily like who he is and what his life has become. That is until he meets Amelia, as played fantastically by Lucy Hale, and she changes things for him. Not right away and not all at once in some dramatic way. But over time they become much more to each other and learn the things about each other they like. Especially when Maya comes into A.J.'s life pretty unexpectedly, making him a father. Even though Maya isn't his kid, he adopts her like she is.
Because in real life, that's the way things go.
It's a beautiful thing to watch and you should check out The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and explore the book of life as soon as you can.
