Thank You For Smoking and Talking A Lot While Saying Nothing
The moral case for using your ability to speak to avoid consequences.
People talk.
It's a thing that they do. Through a combination of air in their lungs, vocal cords in their throats and how their mouth moves, you make noise which allows you to be heard. When you're a kid, these noises come across like gibberish. You have the ability to make the noises but you don't understand how words work or what sounds mean and so it doesn't make any sense to people hearing it. As you get older, things become more clear and you understand how to speak in a way that allows other people to understand what you're saying. This gives you the opportunity to communicate with people and to get ideas across, while they try to get their ideas to you. The older you get the more complex words you can speak and the more detailed the argument or discussion can become.
Enough that you might even be able to change what people say and do with their time. So the more powerful you become with your words, the better off you'll be. However at the same time, you can use words to avoid saying something important if you want to. Do things in a way that sounds important but doesn't really make a lot of sense, even if the words themselves are understandable to people. Speaking this way is different from gibberish because people know what you're saying. They might even create meaning in words you speak that you didn't intend but even still they benefit you thanks to the fact that they think you said one thing when in fact you said another. Or maybe you didn't say anything at all.
The best people known to do this are politicians and marketing people. Politicians and marketing people know how to sound like they're saying profound things when in reality it wasn't anything. Doing things this way has benefits. You appear to be doing something when you're doing nothing. You seem like you care when in fact you don't. All because the words you use sound right when people hear them. Which isn't to say that they don't understand it. They just find it easier to avoid touchy subjects which might get them in trouble or cost them votes or money. Being able to speak without saying anything is a powerful skill, if you can manage it.
Thank You For Smoking is all about talking a lot while saying nothing. Nick Naylor, as played brilliantly by Aaron Eckhart, is a master of speaking in a way that people like. Of making himself look good by saying nice words that make people like him but if you take the time to really listen, you realize that he said nothing. It's a job he does so well that there are people who admire him for it. Even the people who don't like him or the people who he represents, the tobacco industry, have respect for his ability to get himself out of tough situations simply by talking.
It's a fascinating thing to watch and you should do yourself a favour and explore the ability to talk a lot while saying nothing by checking out Thank You For Smoking as soon as possible.
