The Mentalist and the Healing Power of Revenge
The moral case for taking revenge on people to feel better.
For the most part, people don't like revenge.
Wherever possible, people try to avoid getting into situations where revenge is a thing that happens. Usually because they don't want to be on the receiving end of someone's plot to get revenge on them. This makes a certain amount of sense. Being the target of a revenge plot often ends with either you or someone else being dead. It depends on just how motivated whoever is taking the revenge is to reach their ultimate goal. How many resources and who they're willing to get involved in seeking it will show you just how badly you've wronged the person in question.
Although what few people tend to consider is how revenge will impact the person who is taking it. While it can be something that ends badly, if you do it correctly, there are incredible benefits to trying to get revenge on someone. The thing it does more than anything is give you purpose in your life. Before going on this journey to get revenge, your life could've been aimless and uncertain. In having revenge to look forward to, you get direction and a goal to achieve. Your revenge might also open up opportunities you never thought possible as well. People like those in the police and sometimes in the private sector can see this as a goal worth pursuing and help you find what you need.
The police in particular have lots of resources and access to things you wouldn't otherwise be able to get to. Plus if the thing you want revenge for is serious enough, say murder, they have an interest in trying to keep it from happening again. You might also find that you like the idea of getting justice for people who've been wronged. Doing so can give you a sense of joy and fulfillment that you might not get anywhere else. So it makes sense to try and get revenge if you have something worthy of going for it. All of which can make you feel better in the long run.
The Mentalist is very much about how healing something like revenge can be to someone. Patrick Jane, as played brilliantly by Simon Baker, is a man on a single minded mission of revenge. For a very good reason as well, his wife and daughter are murdered by a mysterious person known only as Red John. In pursuit of the revenge he wants, he's willing to go to any lengths, which includes getting involved with the California Bureau of Investigation, run by Teresa Lisbon, played fantastically by Robin Tunney, who is investigating Red John. She does her best to contain Jane's more wild tendencies and make him more focused on getting justice than seeking revenge.
Something that tends to end badly for the people committing crimes in their own need for revenge or whatever else they might be committing them for. It's incredibly beneficial in so many ways.
